How many layers of Kevlar do I need to be bullet resistant?

The short answer to this common question is it depends. To understand this answer better there are several factors to consider. These factors include project type, desired bullet resistance and other considerations that could influence bullet resistance.

The best answer that we have for our customers asking this question is to make samples for testing. Once you have tested your samples you should know the number of layers you will need to use for your project (and I would add a few extra layers just to be safe).

Understandably we would all like to see some online calculators or something to make this process easier but there are no simple ways to accomplish this because each project is different and has different requirements.

What we can say to our customers is that our Kevlar® XP Soft Armor Inserts (found here Kevlar® XP Soft Armor Inserts) have been already tested at an independent Ballistic’s test lab, and conform to NIJ level IIIA standards.
