Designing a Safe Room

If you have ever thought about building a safe room into your home or business, you have come to the right place.

In this blog post, we will be discussing how to design a safe room. Topics covered in this blog will include

  • Why do people build safe rooms

  • How to design a safe room

  • When you might want to build a safe room

Why would anyone want to build a safe room? Well, there are many reasons, with protection being right near the top of the list. Some people might be afraid of a home invasion, while others may want to use one for personal safety for their family. Ultimately, whatever reasoning you have for wanting a safe room in your home or business is yours, and we respect that.

How should you go about designing a safe room? There are a couple of ways to approach this question, but the general principles remain the same. If you are building your home or business from the ground up, the sky is your limit when it comes to room sizes, but if you are retrofitting, you might be more limited with room sizes. Nonetheless, the basics are the same.

Now let’s get into the design. The first thing that you want to look at is the size of the room you would like. Once you have your dimensions, you can then start looking at materials. We can supply both AR500 Steel Panels and NIJ level IIIA Kevlar Panels, both of which are great materials to use for your safe room. We also carry fiberglass wall panels in several bullet-resistant ratings (found here ArmorCo Fiberglass Wall Panels). When it comes to materials, the choice is yours, depending on which types of rounds you wish to stop. All our bullet-resistant materials conform to NIJ or UL 752 standards. To learn more about our materials or bullet resistance ratings, visit our Protection Levels page found here, Ballistic levels.

Another factor to think about when it comes to material choice is weight. The steel panels (found here ArmorCo Steel Panels) will weigh more per square inch than the Kevlar panels (found here ArmorCo Kevlar Panels). Your structure may have a weight limitation, or you may want lighter material because it’s easier to work with; either way, we have you covered. Our steel and some of our fiberglass panels can be a little heavier than our Kevlar panels, and that is something you should take into consideration if weight is a concern.

Now that you know why and how, let’s talk about when. The best time, logistically speaking, would be during a new build process; however, we do not always have that luxury. That said, if you want to build a safe room, the best time is now.

Do not get discouraged; it may seem like a daunting task, but there are plenty of resources out there to assist you, some of which are on our site.
